Trump Administration Must Urge South Korea to Curb KCTU’s Anti-U.S. Activities

From violent protests in Seoul to anti-American rallies in New York, KCTU poses a direct challenge to the U.S.-ROK alliance

The Trump administration must demand that the South Korean government take firm security measures against the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), which has repeatedly engaged in radical and anti-American activities both at home and abroad.

The KCTU has long been notorious for its violent protests. However, its activities have now expanded to the international stage. On July 27, the 72nd anniversary of the Korean War armistice, KCTU members marched from Times Square to Herald Square in New York City, chanting "U.S. Out of Korea." This slogan echoes a slogan North Korea has used for decades, raising concerns that a pro-North Korea, anti-American agenda is being exported across the border.

Experts warn that such behavior is not a simple labor dispute, but a political campaign that directly undermines the U.S.-ROK alliance. They argue that the Trump administration should explicitly request that Seoul block and restrain KCTU’s anti-American campaigns, framing them as a national security matter rather than a domestic labor issue.

Further, proposals are being raised for the U.S. State Department to deny visas to KCTU leaders and their family members. Allowing individuals who have openly engaged in anti-American agitation to enter the United States again, critics say, poses a serious security risk and undermines trust within the alliance.

Conservative voices stress that “KCTU is not merely a labor union but a political entity echoing North Korea’s slogans. The Trump administration must make it clear to the South Korean government that it must take decisive action to curb KCTU’s political activities abroad in order to safeguard the alliance against China and North Korea.”
